The award-winning venue is a leading site for entertainment in Northamptonshire, showcasing dramas, comedy shows, concerts, film screenings and much more. It was voted ‘Regional Theatre of the Year’ in 2011 by Stage 100, whilst also winning awards for their ‘Made in Northampton’ work, among many others. One of the leading theatre architects of the Victorian era, C J Phipps, was the man behind the Royal Theatre. This is predominantly occupied by their in-house productions and seats up to 450. The elegant settings are contrasted by the large, multi-purpose Derngate space, which was constructed in the 1980’s and hosts many of the touring shows. The Derngate is transformed on a regular basis to cater to the type of event at hand, whether it’s classical concerts or snooker tournaments. Beneath the two auditoriums lies the Underground; an area made for creativity and community. This space hosts smaller events, such as recurring comedy nights, VIP events, launches, seminars and so on. There is also another site named after one of the most famous faces to have been involved in the Royal Derngate and also a member of the Northampton Repertory Players; the Errol Flynn Filmhouse. Here visitors can enjoy an unparalleled cinema experience, selecting from a menu of independent and contemporary films.
