Originally composed by Michael Holohan for Uilleann pipes as a virtuouso piece, the Road to Lough Swilly was later scored for pipes and string orchestra. The music is programmatic in that it describes the charachter of Hugh O'Neill with each of the movements exploring an important event in his life. The composer makes colourful use of traditional Irish musical forms including reels, jigs, slip jigs and slow airs. The music is at times joyful, humorous and lively but listeners will be aware of the tragic undertones which haunted Hugh O'Neill's life. This performance features the original soloist whom this music was composed with in mind, Mick O'Brien on Uilleann pipes. ConTempo quartet need no introduction, being one of the most virtuosic and successful quartets both nationally and internationally. The Boyne Valley Chamber Orchestra recorded this composition with Mick O'Brien & ConTempo Quartet in 2018 and CD's will be available to purchase on the night.
