Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat started out as a ‘pop cantata’ at a London school in 1968 before it was recorded and released as an album in 1969.
The musical received its professional premiere at the Edinburgh International Festival in 1972 and found its way onto the West End in 1983, followed by Broadway in 1982.
Featuring songs such as ‘Any Dream Will Do’, ‘Close Every Door’ and ‘Go Go Go Joseph’, it has gone on to become one of the world’s biggest family musicals, staged thousands of times in over 80 countries across the world.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat tells the story of Joseph from the Bible book of Genesis, as he is sold into slavery by his brothers who are envious of his coat and ability to interpret dreams.
After winding up imprisoned in Egypt, Joseph’s unique ability ends up being his salvation as he soon becomes one of the country’s biggest heroes.
The original Broadway production of the musical was nominated for numerous Tony and Drama Desk awards and its 1991 London revival production won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Set Designer in 1992.
