Keanu Reeves to star in Toy Story 4

The ‘Matrix’ actor has a ‘mystery role’ in the upcoming Disney sequel.

Keanu Reeves to star in Toy Story 4

According to Tim Allen (aka Buzz Lightyear), Keanu Reeves has joined the cast of the highly-anticipated fourth installment of Toy Story. The computer-animated film is set for release in June 2019, and reprises the franchise’s most beloved characters, Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Bo Peep (voiced by Annie Potts), Jessie (voiced by Joan Cusack) and Rex (voiced by Wallace Shawn). The 54-year-old ‘Speed’ star is among the list of new characters introduced in the upcoming film, alongside Tony Hale, Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key. But which character will he play?

Last week, Allen dropped hints on ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’ about Reeves’ part, but still left audiences guessing. He claimed that the character is currently nameless, but is a very small toy that has a bit of an edge.

“Actually, a little inside story: even he (Reeves) said, the gentle, wonderful guy that he is - “This sounds too much like Buzz Lightyear”. And his character does have an edge to that. And the guy said “So we calmed him down a little bit” and they reminded me his toy is only that big”. Allen shared while gesturing that Reeve’s character was only a couple of inches in size.

Alluding to the clues provided by Allen, some have attempted a guess at who his character might be. Could Reeves be one of the green army men? Or leaning on Allen’s statement “They really will surprise you with the toys they came up with”, will Reeves play a totally new and modern toy never-before-featured in previous Toy Story’s?

This is the first times Reeves will lend his vocals to a computer-animated character. His most notable roles in Hollywood have often featured heavily in the genres of action or sci-fi thriller, including ‘Neo’ in the ‘Matrix’ trilogy (1999; 2003; 2003), and the title character in ‘Constantine’ (2005) and the three ‘John Wick's’ (2014; 2017; 2019). He also broke out of conventional roles with the likes of ‘My Own Private Idaho’ in (1991) playing opposite River Phoenix and in comedies in the Bill & Ted franchise (1989; 1991). Now the actor adds 'children’s films' to his catalogue of blockbusters.

Toy Story 4 is rumoured to be more emotional than its predecessors. Speaking to Fallon, Allen declared:

“The last scene of that movie was...I couldn’t even got through it…I had to turn around from looking at it in the studio, because it was so emotional.”
